Condo NY: Simon Preston Gallery hosts Sé galery

As part of the Condo project, which promotes the international exchange between art galleries, Simon Preston, in New York, hosts Sé Gallery, from São Paulo, with the exhibition 8 movements, a few Sundays, one song, by Maria Montero.

Maria Montero has been acting in the artistic scene of São Paulo for two decades. Besides being an artist and curator, she is also acknowledged for her work as the director of Sé Gallery. Her first solo exhibition in New York both reflects this ambiguous position within the arts system and pays homage to the city’s creative and transgressive legacy, with references to the work by Trisha Brown and Lou Reed.

8 movements, a few Sundays, one song presents a series of works whose matrix is the own artist’s naked body photographed in various positions that are afterwards replicated in paper drawings, photocopies and transparencies. Montero’s work deals with subjects related to biography, affections and the very craft of the artist-curator-gallery director itself.

While approaching dance through drawing, Montero performs a conceptual operation conceived to enable a portable and low-cost exhibition for a specific context. Dancing is doing what needs to be done. The series was conceived on Sundays, the day when she leaves aside the commercial obligations that give her financial support and allow her to dedicate herself to the poetic production.

Due to the overlap, the images simulate not only dance movements, but also that constant exchange of roles in her multiple social performance. “These are amateur photos, an ordinary gesture made by my boyfriend on a Sunday. From then on I made eight drawings that were later photocopied and thus unfold in a multiplicity of overlaps. That is a work based on the ideas of the contour and the copy”, she explains. And concludes: “I do not know how to dance or draw, I am the great pretender”.

Integrando a programação do projeto Condo, que promove o intercâmbio internacional entre galerias de arte, Simon Preston, de Nova York, recebe a Galeria Sé, de São Paulo, com a mostra 8 movements, a few Sundays, one song, de Maria Montero. 

A atuação de Maria Montero na cena artística paulistana soma duas décadas. Além de artista e curadora, ela é também reconhecida por seu trabalho como galerista à frente da Sé. Sua primeira individual em Nova York reflete esta posição ambígua dentro do sistema das artes e presta tributo ao legado criativo e transgressor da cidade, trazendo referências à obra de Trisha Brown e Lou Reed.

8 movements, a few Sundays, one song apresenta uma série de trabalhos cuja matriz é o próprio corpo nu da artista fotografado em posições diversas que depois são replicadas em desenhos em papel, fotocópias e transparências.

A obra de Montero trata de assuntos relacionados à biografia, aos afetos e ao próprio ofício da artista-curadora-galerista. Ao aproximar a dança pelo desenho, Montero realiza uma operação conceitual imaginada para viabilizar uma exposição portátil e de baixo custo em contexto específico. Dançar é fazer o que precisa ser feito. A série foi concebida aos domingos, dia em que deixa de lado as obrigações comerciais que lhe dão o sustento financeiro para dedicar-se à produção poética. 

Sobrepostas, as imagens simulam não apenas os movimentos da dança, mas também a constante troca de papéis em sua performance social múltipla. “São fotos não profissionais, um gesto corriqueiro do meu namorado num domingo. A partir dali fiz 8 desenhos que depois, fotocopiados, se desdobraram em uma multiplicidade de sobreposições. É um trabalho baseado na ideia do contorno e da cópia”, explica. E completa: “Não sei dançar nem desenhar, sou a grande fingidora”.
