Davi Rodrigues

O artista Davi Rodrigues (Cachoeira, 1968), que agora é representado pela Sé, faz sua primeira exposição individual em São Paulo, na sede da galeria, na Vila Modernista de Flávio de Carvalho. A evolução do picolé reúne parte de suas "coleções", séries de gravuras e pinturas em papel, que tratam de temas, na grande maioria, relacionados à cultura do Recôncavo Baiano. A abertura acontece no sábado, 17 de junho, das 12h às 17h.

A obra de Davi Rodrigues é indissociável da experiência de ter nascido e viver às margens do Rio Paraguaçu, na cidade de Cachoeira, no Recôncavo Baiano. Seus desenhos, pinturas, gravuras, esculturas e escritos retratam as personagens, lendas e tradições — além da flora e da fauna —, da vida ribeirinha de uma região de enorme influência africana e notável riqueza cultural. Figura pública de muitas facetas e muito ativa nas esferas social, cultural, política e espiritual da cidade, Rodrigues produz um trabalho de grande relevância para a história e a memória de sua comunidade. Ele é o autor de uma espécie de arquivo pictórico das vivências no Recôncavo: pinta sua aldeia mirando o universal.

O título da exposição é emprestado de uma de suas coleções, em que Rodrigues, num processo de rememoração da infância, cataloga as guloseimas de sua terra. Outro conjunto de pinturas tem os peixes do Rio Paraguaçu como tema. Em todos esses trabalhos, de enorme carga poética, fica evidente sua abordagem pictórica ao mesmo tempo singela e sofisticada. As outras duas séries ocupam-se do universo carnavalesco. Rodrigues é criador de uma linguagem própria, marcada pela exuberância visual de cores, traços e pontos, a qual um de seus conterrâneos deu o nome de "davidismo". Máscaras do Recôncavo Baiano (2019-2023) é um belo exemplo deste uso particular da técnica pontilhista, em que as imagens são traçadas, desenhadas, pintadas e retraçadas por pincéis, estilete e as próprias mãos. Já as gravuras de Carnaval de Girona foram produzidas originalmente no contexto da exposição a qual o artista participou na cidade espanhola, em 2019. Aqui, novamente, as máscaras ganham protagonismo, porém, desta vez, com o emprego de técnica distinta, salta aos olhos o domínio que o artista tem da figuração humana, além do apuro com que representa tecidos e vestimentas. Em Davi Rodrigues o refinamento formal está a serviço da exaltação da cultura popular.

David Rodrigues

The artist Davi Rodrigues (Cachoeira, 1968), who Sé now represents, holds his first solo exhibition in São Paulo, at the gallery's headquarters, in Flávio de Carvalho's Vila Modernista. A evolução do picolé [The evolution of popsicle] features part of its "collections", a series of engravings and paintings on paper, which deal with themes, most of the time, related to the culture of the Recôncavo Baiano. The opening is on Saturday, June 17, from 12 am to 5 pm.

The work of Davi Rodrigues is inseparable from the experience of being born and living on the banks of the Paraguaçu River, in the city of Cachoeira, in the Recôncavo Baiano. His drawings, paintings, engravings, sculptures, and writings portray the characters, legends, and traditions — in addition to the flora and fauna — of riverside life in a region of enormous African influence and remarkable cultural richness. A public figure with many facets and very active in the social, cultural, political, and spiritual spheres of the city, Rodrigues creates work with great relevance for the history and memory of his community. He is the author of a kind of pictorial archive of experiences in the Recôncavo: he paints his village aiming the universal.

The title of the exhibition is borrowed from one of his collections, in which Rodrigues, in a process of childhood remembrance, catalogs the goodies of his land. Another set of paintings has the fish of the Paraguaçu River as its theme. In all these works, of enormous poetic charge, his pictorial approach is evident, at the same time simple and sophisticated. The other two series deal with the carnival universe. Rodrigues is the creator of his own language, marked by the visual exuberance of colors, lines, and dots, which one of his fellow countrymen called "davidism". Máscaras do Recôncavo Baiano (2019-2023) is a fine example of this particular use of the pointillist technique, in which images are traced, drawn, painted, and retraced by brushes, stylus, and his own hands. The engravings for Carnaval de Girona, meanwhile, were originally produced in the context of the exhibition the artist participated in in the Spanish city in 2019. Here, again, masks take center stage, but this time, with the use of a different technique, the artist's mastery of human figuration stands out, as well as the refinement with which he represents fabrics and clothing. In Davi Rodrigues, formal refinement is at the service of exalting popular culture.
