Arnaldo de Melo é o artista escolhido pela Sé para representar a galeria na 18ª edição da SP-Arte. A feira internacional de arte será realizada entre os dias 06 e 10 de abril no Pavilhão da Bienal, no Parque Ibirapuera. Melo apresentará a instalação inédita Waze.

Waze parte de um conjunto de trabalhos que o artista vem criando desde 2019. Tendo como suporte a tela, porém contando com materiais e técnicas distintas - colagem, acrílica, spray, óleo, tecido, papelão -, as obras são combinadas em configurações ortogonais, lembrando as rotas de um mapa. "O título remete à disposição dos trabalhos em sequências lineares, perpendiculares umas às outras, de forma a sugerir um caminho ou uma deriva sobre a cidade", explica o artista. A denominação provém do popular aplicativo de dispositivos móveis baseado em navegação por GPS. Waze, vale lembrar, corresponde à pronúncia da palavra ways em Israel, onde o app foi criado.

A série é resultado das caminhadas de Melo pela região central de São Paulo, uma reelaboração pictórica dos trajetos que o levam diariamente da casa ao ateliê, e vice-versa. Intercambiados por cores e gestualidade, os trabalhos capturam o momento politico e social do Brasil contemporâneo e reafirmam o interesse do artista em “falar” sobre a cidade. Daí a inserção de peças gráficas que recolhe nas ruas durante o percurso, como no caso das sequências que compreendem cartazes feitos por pedintes e manifestantes. Outras telas em pequeno formato são revestidas por "peles", materiais coletados nas ruas, como cobertores e roupas descartadas. O gesto original do pintor e a tela única são fragmentados em Waze, e o desejo de encontro com o outro desconhecido se torna aparente. O arquiteto-ativista, que tem no plano da urbe o seu campo de atuação, emerge na identidade complexa do artista. "No centro da megacidade, caminho atento às pessoas, à arquitetura e aos sons em volta", explica.

Para Arnaldo de Melo, Waze é um work in process, proposição alinhada a uma constelação de experiências e movimentos pregressos da história da arte, além de registro do tempo em que vivemos. Conformada a ambientes distintos, a instalação pode ser recombinada em diferentes traçados, desde que mantida a integridade de cada alinhamento ou sequência de peças. Os trabalhos apresentados na 18ª edição da SP-Arte se referem à montagem específica para a o estande da Sé Galeria. Porém, são infinitas as possibilidades de combinações da série.

Arnaldo de Melo is the artist chosen by Sé to represent the gallery at the 18th edition of SP-Arte. The international art fair will take place from April 6 to 10 at the Biennial Pavilion in Ibirapuera Park. Melo will present the new installation Waze.

Waze departs from a set of works that the artist has been creating since 2019. Having the canvas as a support, but relying on different materials and techniques - collage, acrylic, spray, oil, fabric, cardboard - the works are combined in orthogonal configurations, reminiscent of the routes of a map. "The title refers to the arrangement of the works in linear sequences, perpendicular to each other, so as to suggest a path or a drift over the city," explains the artist. The name comes from the popular mobile device application based on GPS navigation. Waze, it is worth remembering, corresponds to the pronunciation of the word ways in Israel, where the app was created.

The series is the result of Melo's walks through São Paulo's central area, a pictorial reworking of the paths that take him daily from his home to his studio, and vice versa. Interchanged by colors and gestures, the works capture the political and social moment of contemporary Brazil and reaffirm the artist's interest in "talking" about the city. Hence the insertion of graphic pieces that he collects on the streets along the way, as in the case of the sequences that comprise posters made by beggars and demonstrators. Other small-format canvases are covered with "skins", materials collected in the streets, such as blankets and discarded clothes. The painter's original gesture and the single canvas are fragmented in Waze, and the desire to meet the unknown other becomes apparent. The architect-activist, whose field of action is the urban plan, emerges in the artist's complex identity. "In the center of the megacity, I walk attentive to the people, the architecture, and the sounds around," he explains.

For Arnaldo de Melo, Waze is a work in process, a proposition aligned to a constellation of past experiences and movements in art history, as well as a record of the time in which we live. Conforming to different environments, the installation can be recombined in different layouts, as long as the integrity of each alignment or sequence of pieces is maintained. The works presented in the 18th edition of SP-Arte refer to the specific assembly for Sé Galeria's booth. However, the possibilities of combinations of the series are endless.
